BIO

Aimee Magee is a visual artist specialising in sculpture & installation and currently works from Pollen Arts studios. She holds a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2016 part of which she also conducted studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Her practice is inspired by history, politics, mysticism and folklore. Using ready available, eco-friendly materials such as bread dough and newspaper she plays with the symbols inherit in them, while using traditional craft methods to subvert their meaning.

Since graduating Aimee has been nominated for the Clyde & Co. Arts Award in London and exhibited in various arts venues including Platform Arts 2017, Catalyst Arts 2018-19, Stendhal Arts Festival 2019 and her recent solo show “You Are What You Read” in Pollen Gallery Belfast 2019.

Further she has a passion for community arts. She has been engaged in projects with the Beat Carnival as member of the Carnival Arts Steering Group and has co-founded the experimental community arts project ArtsFest, providing a free platform for artists at any stage of their career as a cross-border initiative.

Artist Statement:

In my practice I strive to transform the mundane every day into the exciting, intriguing and absurd.

I am interested in invested objects, things which are imbued with an emotional importance that outweighs their material value. I enjoy breathing new life into old imagery and ephemera.

I love to juxtapose imagery and create entirely new abstract narratives which provoke an intellectual effort within the viewer.

My obsession with imagery and the meaning it holds extends to the process and craft of how the image is made. I am fascinated by reproductive processes and the profound need to revisit a past idea or the need for repetition, structure, the idea of a second chance through trial and error.

My films and performances echo this by playing with the idea of the artist representing a paranormal figure, with a charged and relationship with their immediate surroundings, eventually extending to the greater, physical world.

Prominence is also placed on ceremonial ritualism and divination. I am originally from Northern Ireland and conveying a general scrutiny to society and national self-understanding, my work can take a twist which questions the way nationality is often practised. My most recent work deals with the instability in political symbolism and the hidden undercurrents in socialist structures.

Throughout my work a deep-rooted utopian desire is present. -We all want to change the world, the best way to do this is by changing general consciousness and therefore perspectives on a personal level.

Through use of digital media, sculpture and print, I aim to produce works which create an immersive experience for the viewer; interactive even without physical interaction.
